The Clearing

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt  (April 2010)

Amy is drawn to the misty, mysterious clearing behind her Aunt Mae’s place because it looks like the perfect place to hide from life. A place to block out the pain of her last relationship, to avoid the kids in her new town, to stop dwelling on what her future holds after high school. Then, she meets a boy lurking in the mist–Henry. Henry is different from any other guy Amy has ever known. And after several meetings in the clearing, she’s starting to fall for him.

But Amy is stunned when she finds out just how different Henry really is. Because on his side of the clearing, it’s still 1944. By some miracle, Henry and his family are stuck in the past, staving off the tragedy that will strike them in the future. Amy’s crossing over to Henry’s side brings him more happiness than he’s ever known–but her presence also threatens to destroy his safe existence.

In The Clearing, author Heather Davis crafts a tender and poignant tale about falling in love, finding strength, and having the courage to make your own destiny–a perfect book to slip into and hide away for awhile.

“Henry’s dilemma is especially poignant, and a completely unexpected ending shows that Davis is capable of creating a riveting read that lingers long after the story ends.”  (ALA Booklist)

“Alternating between Amy and Henry’s intersecting stories, Davis’s (Never Cry Werewolf) second novel has a quiet power; the time travel element gives the story the feel of an old-fashioned romance, with a tinge of melodrama. The tale takes some unexpected turns, providing insights into healing and the weight of destiny along the way.” (Publishers Weekly)

I am a YA librarian. I loved “The Clearing”. I recommend it to teens all the time. I hope there will be a sequel!!!

    • Thanks, Cindy! I’m not sure about a sequel for The Clearing, but you never know. 🙂

      • Bekah Heath says:

There HAS to be a sequel. There are still so many things hanging out in the open to be answered. She’s walking into the mist again… whats after that? I loved the book and want more! =)

      • Thanks, Bekah! Glad you liked the book and that it has you thinking what happens next for Amy… 🙂

      • Michelle says:

I really think their should be a sequel. The ending was a huge cliffhanger! I know some people say when i ask them about the ending and what happened next with the mist and what now that im just suppose to fill in the blanks for myselft or something but i really dont want to do that. This book would make an excellent sequel.

      • Thanks, Michelle. People have strong opinions on The Clearing’s ending and that’s good. I don’t know that there will ever be a sequel – but you guys keep asking! 🙂

      • janelle says:

there should be a sequel ,on the end it does kinda keep you wondering is she going to walk into the mist,do they ever find henry?,,i just finished reading the book and i loved it.:)

      • Hi Janelle,

You are not alone in asking for the sequel. I think we’d all like to go back to their world… thanks for reading!

      • Becky says:

I loved this book so much!! there needs to be a sequel! i finished it last night and today in class when i was zoning out i kept thinking what would happen next for Amy!

      • Hi Becky! Thanks for your note. I’m so glad you loved the book. I don’t have plans for a sequel to The Clearing at the moment. So many of you fans want one, though. 🙂

      • lidia says:

please we need a sequel!! ❤

      • Hi Lidia,

You’re not the only one to ask for a sequel. Maybe someday. Thanks for writing me!

  2. Sarah says:

I absolutely loved this book, I let my friends borrow it and they loved it too!

  3. Mallory says:

Alright! So, I just finished reading The Clearing… and I’m going to be honest. I LOVED it. Honestly; I liked it even more than Never Cry Werewolf and that is surprising to come by. I could really see that your writing has improved incredebly with just writing one previous book. The description, darkness, and emotion of The Clearing kind of scared me a bit… but in a good way! Many one book storys are rushed and usually don’t feel like they are completely finish, but you were able to write this story with both of these. I have to say… one of the best books I’ve read in a LONG time! Keep up the fantastic work!!!!! I can’t wait to read more from you! 🙂

  4. Mallory says:

Oh, and I just made my mother read it… she loved it also! 🙂 We are both huge fans of your work!

  5. myra says:

BUT omgggg that was amzing 😐 i loved it all it was cute and sad and heartwarming . i especcialy loved the ending teh most ! i think thats the best ending ive ever seen. this books reaaly very great and diff , and ill read teh rest of yur books to ! thankyu

  6. Kristy says:

I just finished reading The Clearing, and I loved it. I’m a high school English teacher, and I’ll be recommending this book to my students. I especially enjoy how the ending allows the reader to use his/her imagination. I know what (or who) I believe is waiting in the mist!

  7. Megan says:

I really loved this book. I read it in a day, just couldn’t put it down. I will say, at first, I was so disappointed with the ending. All I could think was that it couldn’t end like that. But the story stuck with me and lingered for a couple days and the more I really thought about that last chapter, the more I loved it! All that he did for her, to change the outcome of her life and her family’s life, along with his own family’s. Plus it ends so that I can think about them reuniting in the mist. But then my mind wonders to the complications of them reuniting; WHEN is it that he’s waiting for her, how will the time affect them this time, what about Jackson? Like I said, this book definitely lingers with you for a while. LOVE IT! 🙂

  8. Gillian says:

I found The Clearing in the YA section of the bookstore a few days ago, and I bought it. Since it was a rainy day, I sat down with a mug of hot chocolate and read it within four hours. It was really good. I’m so glad that I found it. It’s one of my favorite books now.

    • Wow, thanks, Gilian! I love that you read it in one sitting and with hot chocolate, to boot. I’m glad you chose The Clearing at the bookstore. Thank you!

  9. Jami says:

I just finished reading The Clearing and I am just so full of emotion. The book had such great descriptions and made me feel exactly what Amy and Henry were feeling. I love that it took place in Washington and had the fog- that added to the mysteriousness of the story. I really hope you decide to write a sequel at some point. I would love to know what happens with Amy.

    • Awww! Jami, what a nice note. I’m so glad the book moved you! Yeah, a lot of people are asking for a sequel… no plans yet, but you never know. Thanks again!

  10. Melissa says:

I just finished The Clearing and absolutely loved it. I’m a writer myself and I couldn’t put it down. The love story between Amy and Henry was so touching and romantic, I was crying at the end of every chapter. I’m not sure if there could be a sequel but I would love it if there was. The love between the two of them can go beyond time barriers ( I hope) because I cared for these characters so much, I want to see what happens after HER wish. Thanks for a great story.

  11. Nancy Monzon says:

Just finished reading the book! I absolutely loved it! Please make a sequel.

  12. Scarletrose says:

“The Clearing” isn’t just a cheesy and stupid teenage romance book. It’s about growing up, learning how to love, and learning how to be strong even when it’s the difficult thing to do. The imagery is so absolutely vivid it is impossible not to feel a part of this story. We can taste, feel everything (food, weather, feelings…) even the voice contributed heavily to that.

In brief, “The Clearing” is a marvelously written, quick and lovely read. The setting is a wonderful back drop to the story, and the juxtaposition of Henry’s time and Amy’s is intriguing.

Much to our delight, please write a sequel. I really like your book.

  13. Christina says:

I loved this book so much. Although I am only 19, the 1944 date really interested me the most because I am fascinated with that decade and always wish that I lived my life then. Henry was my favorite and because of him, guys in the real world now have to meet my high expectations haha. I would LOVE for you to write a sequel, defiantly about Henry and what happens with him, and also with Amy and when/ if she goes back into the mist. Henry could be waiting for her there. But it would be awesome and would make me extremely happy to see a sequel for Henry. Hope you consider it!

    • Aw, so glad you liked the book, Christina! I will definitely think about a sequel in the future. Right now, I’m getting ready for my fall book to come out and writing a top secret new project that involves heartbreak and magic… Stay tuned!

  14. samantha says:

i hope they plan on turning this into a movie it was amazing and you should really think about a sequal…

  15. Kaelin says:

Maybe someone can help me. I throughly enjoyed this book. Although at first I wasn’t drawn to it because it was a book for school, I soon loved it. I am a bit cofused about the ending though, can someone explain?

    • Hi Kaelin,
I’m glad you enjoyed the book. I try to limit readers posting “spoilers” here about the book, so I’ll just say that in writing that endings, I’m allowing the reader to imagine what happens next. Why does Amy see what she sees in the field at the end of the book? It’s a book about miracles, so you might think that Henry’s found a way to come back to her. Or, maybe you’ll be content with Amy’s new reality since Henry’s choice changed his life and Uncle Joe’s/Aunt Mae’s and also Amy’s. You have to decide for yourself. 🙂 Hope that helps you!

  16. Haley says:

Hi Heather! I read this book and I absolutely fell in love with it! I couldn’t put it down for a second!! Henry is adorable!! And Jackson is just a cutie I wanted to give him a million hugs! With Matt and Amy’s argument…It got me thinking and I’m ready to stand up to a guy who has hurt me and is still doing so. This book has inspired me to finally stand up for myself. Thank you so much for writing this book and I can’t wait to read more.

  17. Paulina says:

hi heather!! im still thinking that you should have a sequel for this book 🙂 i know youre telling as that the ending is for us readers to imagine whats going to happen next. but theres just so many possibilities and i cant help but feel that this book just never really ends. another book would help the readers stop trying to figure out the “ending” which never really ends. i hope, really hope, that you make a sequel 🙂

    • Aw, thanks, Paulina. Yes, people keep asking about a sequel – but I don’t know if I’ll ever do one. Maybe it’s enough to believe they found a way to be together and that true love works miracles. Not sure myself, but I keep rooting for true love each time.

  18. Joey says:

Today, I sat and read The Clearing non-stop in the library all day. Amy’s character spoke to me deeply. I went through a lot of problems with a girl.. This story just really made me take a step back and try to understand things from different peoples perspectives. The way Amy talks about never being loved for who she is.. I wish I could go into a misty past and meet a sweet girl like her. Feeling alone and anti-social because you don’t know how else to feel. The older characters had so many words of wisdom. I havent read a book in a long time and I’ve never sat and read one all the way through like that but I’m glad It was with this one. thank you.

    • Aw — Joey! Thank you for this note. I’m glad you could relate to the characters and are trying to understand things from other people’s perspectives after reading the book. I think all of us would like to find an Amy/Henry of our own. Hugs!

  19. Carissa says:

i just wanted to say that this was a fantastic book and i loved it!! i have recommended it to all of my friends!! I am also doing a book report on it and i have a two questions. What is Amy’s last name? and, What is her hometown?

  20. Carissa says:

Your a wonderful writer!!!I thought i would cry because the book ended!I cant wait for the next books for Never Cry Werewolf!I’m definitely sucked into your writings!I’ve been trying to look for books that are like your books but yours are just One Of A Kind nothing can top your books. And i wonder what will happen to Jackson? This book just lingers in my mind!!

  22. Thanks for such a sweet comment, Jessica! I’m glad you like the books. 🙂

  23. rieyah says:

hi! i am totally fall in love with this book.. i wonder if there will be any sequel. since she ended up going into the mist again after henry disappeared after he went to the army, which means, they already grew up.. i want a happy ending.. maybe then he can live in real life instead of inside the mist.. so many kinds of imagination i’m having right now.. i keep rereading it… maybe one day, you make this book into a movie. i’ll be the first ever will watch it…

  24. Vienna says:

I’ve never really been able to name a book as my ‘favorite’ (^-^ I usually end up saying the one I’ve read last) until I read The Clearing two years ago.
It’s a simply brilliant book. Especially the ending. (I think it made me cry :3)
I read Wherever You Go a couple months ago and loved it almost as much. I really like how you used a second person perspective in some of the chapters. I’d never seen something written that way before.
Anyway, I look forward to reading the rest of your books. Thank you for sharing them with us!

    Keep up the good work,
    – V

I’ve never read anything like this, and I read more than a average person should. It left me hanging, it had me on the verge of tears and so many emotions put all into one. It probably is my favorite book ever and I’m suggesting to well everyone basically. I love this book so much, I’ll never get tired of reading it , thank you so much! 38. Lexi says:

Heather!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEAASEE! A sequel please! I will like hug you a million times please! I need more! I’ll do anything!!:)

  39. luisa says:

    Is there a movie???

  40. Hi heather i was wondering if you ever planed on turning the clearing into a movie. i read it and loved it. it’s hard to find book’s that i’m interested in and reading. when i was little you’d be lucky if i even glanced at a book and i read this one in like two day’s. i would just love to see it kinda brought to life well i hope you do=]

    • Thanks, Kateland! It’s a movie in my mind — that’s kind of what happens when you write a novel. You see the whole story unfolding, just like you’re watching it on the big screen. It would be cool if it were a “real” movie…

  41. Sara says:

Love this book soo much! Words can’t even describe how much I love it. You’re awesome! Hope there’s a sequel one day!

  42. Emily says:

Hi Heather! I absolutely LOVED The Clearing. It is amazing! I have read it twice and I cry everytime at the end of the book. It is amazing!

  43. Julia says:

I loved the Clearing! It was an amazing book and I hope you’ll make a second book sometime soon!

    • Thanks, Julia! I’m so glad you liked the book. I’m not planning to write a sequel, but I do have other stories in mind that have a similar historical feel to The Clearing in mind.

  44. Jay says:

I loved the clearing!! Absolutely amazing, but do you have any actors in mind who resemble Henry & Amy maybe even the other characters? Please do tell!!

  45. Sarah says:

This book was one of the best books i have ever read. It really is a fantastic book and it made me think about how important it is to love and be loved. I can related somewhat to Amy and i loved reading the book. A sequel could be much appreciated. (:

    • Hi Sarah —

Thanks for the sweet note! I’m sorry for the long, long delay in replying. I’m so happy you loved The Clearing. Many readers have requested a sequel, but I don’t plan on writing one. I’m starting on a new book that is not a sequel, but will have some of the same themes as The Clearing. I’ll let you know when I have a date for publishing it.

  46. Nicole says:

I got the book as an advanced read years ago and though I don’t have favorites for anything (because I can’t make up my mind), I can say that this is my favorite book. It is like no other romance novel I’ve ever read and the concrete language you used is amazing. I can imagine each scene so vividly. You are a great writer and I just wish more people knew about this book. I’ve reread it so many times already and all I can say is I hope one day I can find my Henry. ( without the time travel of course) Take care and good luck on writing more books!

    • Oh, Nicole! What a sweet note. Sorry for the delay in replying. I’m so glad you loved the Clearing. I wanted to create in Henry the boy I wish I’d met when I was young, and I’m glad that he resonated with you, too.

  47. Brittany says:

This Book will Always Be My Number One Favorite ! It Was The First Book That Ever Made Me Cry And Feel Feelings I Never Knew I Had . Thank You !

  48. cierrs says:

I found it in my school library because i was looking for a book so i could start reading more often. And this book did just that 🙂 you did an amazing job with this story!! I was wondering if you could write a sequel about what ahppens whenshe walks into the mist at the very end!! please really think about it:)

    • Aw, Cierra! That’s such a sweet note.

I wish I could write a sequel for this book, but I feel like it is done for now. I like to think that Amy and Henry are together somewhere in time… somehow.

Thanks again for writing me. I’m so glad you love the book.

  49. Annie says:

I loved this book so much! I just finished reading it. I know that it was a good book because I will be thinking about how it made me feel for a while. I really wish there was a movie for the book! And also a sequel! You’re a wonderful writer! I plan to read more of your books very soon!

  50. Kailyn Cookson says:

After starting and finishing this book within the same time setting, I found this to be my new favorite book. The Clearing had me expressing my emotions outloud because I became so attached. Here I am, two days later and I still haven’t watch tv or started another book because I don’t want that story out of my head! Not to mention, I may have fallen in love with Henry myself:) Thank you for a trully inspiring story that will forever have a special place on my bookshelf!

    • Hi Kailyn —

Wow! That’s so touching that The Clearing resonated with you so deeply. I’m really happy that you liked it so well. Thanks so much for your sweet note. I hope you’ve started reading a new book, though! 🙂

  51. Lucy says:

Ms.Davis, I am the biggest fan of your writing! I have read all your books you have written and “The Clearing” is my ablsolute favorite! This book really spoke to me, You helped open me up to speaking my mind and writting more. I never thought I would thibk more clearly about life after reading this book. You have inspired me to begin my own writing. Please tell me you have thought about writing a continued book to “The Clearing” ! I hope to read more and more of your books 🙂
    With love

    • Hi Lucy:

Thank you so much for your sweet note. Sorry for the delay in replying! I’m glad that reading The Clearing gave you courage to speak your mind. Best of luck to you and your writing — I’m so happy you’re going to tell your own stories.

      Much love,

  52. Samantha says:

I bought and read this book when I was in Grade 10 and I continue to stare at its place on my book shelf and glare at it. I want so desperately to re-read the novel but the first read broke my heart. By the end of the book I was curled up crying my eyes out while my sister stood laughing hysterically at my emotions for the fictional characters. I’m not sure what it was about the book that touched me so deeply, if it was the love of the time period I already had that Henry was stuck in, or the way Amy loved and trusted him so deeply and she clearly meant just as much to him but she would never have him again. He will forever be only a photograph hanging by the stairs that she must forever walk past and wonder what happened to Henry and why she is so curious about a man who she only thinks saved her uncle. I did like the fact that she ended up with the Jackson in the end as well though, I can’t stand love triangles as they happen so often in books now. It was such a sad read but also a great one as I think it actually ended quite happily which was so refreshing. So really, I think I am just trying to say thank you for writing a book that allowed me to have such an amazing love hate relationship in the best way ever. (I do realize how positively strange that sounds!)

Also, I lent my friend Patrick the book right after I had read it, he was curious as to what book could possibly make me so happy and sad. When he gave it back he said it didn’t upset him and then we got in to this huge argument because he tried to call Henry a ghost and I was just not okay with that, haha. Anyway, this year, grade 11, Pat and I are at a party playing ‘truth’ and I asked him what he truly thought of the book and he replied with, “Honestly Sam, I cried like I a baby! AND THEY ARE NOT GHOSTS.”
Even your time paradox romance touched the heart of a teenage boy. (:

    • Hi Samantha:

Oh my gosh. Your note had a few “spoilers” in it, but it’s so sweet I have to respond. I’m glad you related so well to Amy and Henry — and congrats for convincing your friend Patrick to give it a try.

They weren’t ghosts, were they? I think Henry was as real as any boy could have been and really, he was the only true love for Amy. I cried when I was writing several scenes of The Clearing and it always feels so gratifying to know that readers like you were right there with me.

The truest things to say are the hardest sometimes, and that’s what inspires me to write. Thanks for reading and letting me know how my book touched your heart.

  53. Olivia Langham says:

I just finished the clearing, like a few minutes ago :)! And I really REALLY hope you write a sequal because everyone is asking for one!!! I thought the ending was ok. But I really want to know what happens.I LOVE the Clearing sooooooo much!!!!!!!!!! It;s one of my favorite books!! I got it at a book fair and I read the back and thought: “I have to get this (along with my other nine books!) Just please start thinking about a sequal. My mom told me to use my imagination but I want to know what really happens not what I think should happen.

    • Hi Olivia:

Thanks so much for writing me. Sorry for the delay in replying to you!

I don’t plan a sequel to The Clearing. I wrote it to stand alone and the ending is really another story’s beginning that you have to envision in your own imagination. (Sorry to tell you that your mom is right!) 🙂

I personally believe that Amy and Henry will find a way to be together. They are the right people in the wrong time. I hope that helps you!

      Much love,

  54. Ana says:

This book is my favorite . I became so attached to the story I didnt watch tv for 3 days . But the ending has me thinking I didnt understand it very mucho . Does she forgets about him like it never happend ? Why does she feels that way when shes walking towards the clearing ? .

    • Hi Ana:

Thanks for writing. Yes, that’s the problem with time-travel. Did everything happen if Henry changes the past? I’d like to believe that Henry and Amy are true soul mates, and so they belong together, even if Amy can’t remember all that came before. They’ll find each other somehow, in the mist again.

      Glad you liked the book!

  55. Emily says:

i really love you book “The Clearing”. you should reallyyyyy make a sequel i would be the first buyer 🙂

  56. Nicola Hardy says:

Thank you for writing this book! I loved everything about it! I cried at the end it touched me so much!

    • Hi Nicola:

Thank for you for the note and sorry for the late reply! I’m so glad you loved the book. It made me cry writing it! Rockville is a made-up town comprised of a few small towns in the Skagit Valley of Washington State, where I lived before I wrote The Clearing.

  57. Hannah says:

I was very upset by the ending. Although this is my favorite book and I’ve read it literally 15 times. Every time I read it I cry over the unhappy ending! Great book though but there needs to be a sequel to answer all the Cliff hangers!

    • Hi Hannah,
Sorry for the delay in replying to your heartfelt comment. I know it seems like an unhappy ending, but I hope you will see that Amy does have more possibilities in her world. I don’t want to spoil things for anyone who hasn’t read the book, but Amy is drawn back into the mist and I’d like to think that Henry is there waiting for her. Thanks again for reading my books and for writing me!

  58. Rachel says:

I loved this book so much. It literally had me in tears at the end and I was so sad over it and I even start to cry now just thinking about it. It was an amazing book but so heartbreaking because Amy forgets and ends with Jackson but she starts to remember the clearing which just makes me wonder so much…
    Please create a sequel.

    • Hi Rachel:
Sorry for the late response to your sweet note. I cried writing the end of The Clearing. It was hard to say goodbye to the story and to the characters after what they had been through. I’m so glad you loved the book. I don’t have plans for a book two, but I hope the story left you with some idea of the possibilities that Amy finds ahead.

Hi! I am in 9th grade and just read this book for my English report. I am making a presentation about it on Friday. I found some information about why you wrote this book in the back of the novel. It would help me a lot if you could give a little more info as to why you wrote it. That would be great! Thanks so much.

    • Hi Sandie:

Thank you for writing me! I’m glad you chose The Clearing for your presentation — so cool! Some readers write me for information for their book reports, but I’m not that much of a help for those, sorry! I hope that your presentation went well.

What ends up happening to Henry? Did he wish after the war for him to have a chance to see Amy again and that is why at the end of the book there is mist once again?

  61. Chloe McKeown says:

    Hi Heather!

I’m such a huge fan of The Clearing it’s ridiculous. I first read when I was 13, after accidentally coming across it while avoiding recess by volunteering in my elementary school library (I did this very often). This particular time I happened to pick up The Clearing, and I absolutely fell in love. I’ve never read a book who’s characters and story captured me so completely. I can’t fully explain exactly what and how much this book means to me, except for maybe saying that every time a boy lets me down, and I find myself needing to be reminded of what real love looks like, I turn to Henry and Amy. I’m now almost 19, and it’s still one of my favourite books. I’ve been reading the comments and noticing quite a strong demand for a sequel. I completely understand the yearning to know more, and to know what happened to Amy after seeing the mist again. But I have also always felt a knowingness that’s she found her way. That the lessons Henry taught her she couldn’t have learned any other way, and I take comfort in knowing that if they had not been separated from each other, Henry never would have saved Joe, and aunt May never would have had her happy ending. So I think it would have been unfair for Amy to take aunt May’s happy ending, in exchange for her own. Thank you endlessly for writing this book, I am eternally grateful!

    • Hi Chloe – thanks so much for your sweet comments. I love that you turn to The Clearing when you want to be reminded of what real love looks like. I find myself thinking of Amy and Henry often in this way, too. Also, you explain the meaning of this book better than I ever have. (And the ending!) Thanks for understanding what I was trying to convey.

Much love to you on your own path. I think you should try writing some stories, if you haven’t already! – Heather
